How a port works: one address, 65,536 doors

Your computer has 65,536 doors.

The IP address gets data to the right computer. The port number gets it to the right app: web traffic knocks on 443, mail on 25, remote logins on 22.

A port is just a number from 0 to 65,535 that says which program a packet is for.
