There’s a reason you want pizza after an all-nighter.

There’s a reason you want pizza after an all-nighter.

In one study, young adults stayed awake all night, then rated how much they wanted different foods while their brains were scanned. After no sleep, they wanted more high-calorie foods. The foods they wanted added up to about 600 more calories than after a normal night’s sleep.

Their brains showed why. A deep emotional area, the amygdala, reacted more strongly to food. The front areas that judge food went quiet.

So it’s not just weak willpower. Sleep loss changes how your brain judges food.

The two red spots are the amygdalae. The green areas at the front are the parts that judge food: the orbitofrontal cortex and the front of the insula. The animation switches between the rested and the sleep-deprived pattern the study found. It’s an illustration, not measured data.

Send this to the friend who orders takeout after every late night.
